Here’s how it feels to have an empty inbox
The following description was written my Michael Linenberger in his book ‘Total Workday Control’.
I am about to describe an action whose benefits are almost magical. I say magical because whenever I do it, I cannot really explain why it works so well, but it always leaves me in awe. This magical thing is emptying my inbox.
Even today, every time I do it, I am left feeling amazed.
- Amazed at what a difference it makes.
- Amazed at the refreshed feeling I experience each time
- Amazed at the reduction in inbox stress
- Amazed at my resulting eagerness to move forward with my work (and even to get new email.)
All that joy really does not make sense. Yet a remarkable change occurs as soon as I empty the inbox – all the tension and uncertainty associated with the email I’ve been getting all day instantly disappears. All the tension and uncertainty associated with email I’ve been getting all day instantly disappears. Questions like;
- have I read it all?
- did I forget to reply to anyone?
- is there a time bomb in here?
- am I leaving something undone?
All these are gone when I see an empty or near empty inbox. It is such a refreshing feeling to know there is nothing lurking in there. Emptying the inbox make a very clear, almost a symbolic statement: I am done with email, and I can move on to my real work.

Here’s what the most recent graduates report about their experience of the program
“The impact this course has had on my mental health is truly amazing. I can leave work at work and not keep the mental load open. I greatly appreciate everything I have learnt. Thank you.”
– Kumari Casey | Executive Office Coordinator | Metro North Health
“I decided to join the training program because I was struggling to manage my boss’s inbox, which had become overwhelming. I found it difficult to prioritise important emails and ensure nothing urgent was missed. After attending several lunchtime sessions with Steuart, who is incredibly knowledgeable, I knew this training would be beneficial. My expectations were not just met; they were exceeded. The most valuable lesson I learned was how to set up and use the triage view for managing emails. This method has not only saved me time but also made the inbox appear much less daunting. After completing the training, I feel empowered with new skills and tools that I can apply to my work. I am now more confident in managing the inbox and will work closely with my boss to streamline her email workflow, ultimately saving her time. Thank you for this transformative experience!”
– Sabine Sabek | EA | Medicins san Frontieres Australia
“This has made a huge impact on my daily work, met expectations and more. Next step to work with my CEO and also recommend to HR for further training to staff.”
– Riitta Palasrinne | Executive Coordinator | Australian Council for International Development
